Downloading from FlagpolePhotographers.com to PC

  • On the download page select the appropriate month, then click download. It may take minutes for the download to start, then more minutes to download the photos.
  • The download is stored in This PC -> Downloads, which is also c:\users\photo\downloads. It is named tmp-<year>-<month>-Competition-<date and time downloads>.zip
  • To unpack this archive, go to the download folder, select the monthly archive, click the right mouse button and select “Extract All…”, in the dialog click on “Extract”

Importing into Lightroom

  1. Remove all photos from the current Lightroom catalog.
    • Quick way: double-click the desktop icon named “Delete Lightroom catalog”
    • Or, delete current photos in the catalog after starting Lightroom
  2. Start Lightroom
    • Quick way: double-click the desktop icon named “Lightroom” or click “Lr” taskbar icon
    • If Lightroom displays “Lightroom catalog was not found”, click on “Create Default Catalog”ask if and where a new catalog should be created. Click OK to use the default settings
  3. Simplified Lightroom look and feel
    • Many of the the Lighroom settings have been hidden because very little Lightroom functionality is required for the digital competition.
    • See the last part of this document on “Onetime Lightroom setup” to learn more.
  4. Import all digital competitions
    • File -> Import Files and Videos…
      • Local Disk (C:)
        • Users
          • Photo
            • Download
              • Select the the folder you just unzipped, -tmp-<Year>-<Day>-..
    • Click on “Import”
  5. Show the competition categories
    • In the Lightroom “Folders” area click on the imported folder and notice the 3 sub-folders
      • assigned – this months Assigned subject photos
      • digital-a – Digital Open – Class A
      • digital-b – Digital Open – Class B

Displaying a category for judging

Now that the photos have been imported into Lightroom.

  1. Ensure PC is treating the projector as an extended display
    • Windows key + P, then click on Extend
  2. Ensure Lightroom use using Loupe – Normal when displaying photos on Projector
    • Window -> Secondary Display -> Loupe – Normal (Shift+E)
    • Using Loupe – Normal style is required so that Lightroom does not add a white boarder
  3. Select a category in the Folders area on the left side. For example, “assigned”
  4. Sort the photos to match the printed scoresheet
    • View -> Sort -> File Name
    • View -> Sort -> Ascending
  5. How to do the initial run through
    • Hide Lightroom on Projector
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11), tap again as needed
      • The default screen background is Flagpole Photographers logo.
    • Click (select) on the first photo, upper left hand
    • Show Lightroom on Projector screen,
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11)
      • The first photo should be visible
    • Wait 2 seconds
    • Tap Right Arrow key to move to next photo
      • Wait 2 seconds
      • Repeat for every photo
    • Hide Lightroom on Projector
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11), tap again as needed
  6. How to show the photo for judging
    • Hide Lightroom on Projector (if not already hidden)
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11), tap again as needed
    • Click (select) on the first photo, upper left hand
    • Show Lightroom on Projector screen,
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11)
      • The first photo should be visible
      • If the photo has a white border from Lightroom, turn off the border using Window -> Secondary Display -> Loupe – Normal (Shift+E)
    • Wait for judges to score photograph and finish comments
      • Record score on printed score sheet
      • Tap Right Arrow key to move to next photo
      • Repeat for every photo
    • Hide Lightroom on Projector
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11), tap again as needed
  7. Analyze results
    • Searching for top scores and ties
  8. Resolving ties
    • The key to resolving ties is to show all tied photos to the judges at once. This requires that you select all tied photos then display using Survey mode on the Projector
    • Hide Lightroom on Projector (if not already hidden)
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11), tap again as needed
    • Use Ctrl+Click to select each of the tied photos
    • Ensure Lightroom is use using Survey when displaying photos on Projector
      • Windows -> Secondary Display -> Survey (Shift+N)
    • Explain to the judges that the white board around the first photo is an artifact of Lightroom
    • Use Ctrl+Click on a tied photo to as needed, if the judges need to eliminate photos
    • Hide Lightroom on Projector
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11)
    • Record the winning photos on your scoresheet
  9. Displaying winning photos
    • Hide Lightroom on Projector (if not already hidden)
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11), tap again as needed
    • Click on the third place photo
    • Show photo Window -> Secondary Display -> Loupe – Normal (Shift+E)
      • Congratulate winner
    • Click on the second place photo
      • Congratulate winner
    • Click on the first place photo
      • Congratulate winner
    • Hide Lightroom on Projector
      • Tap F11, or use Window -> Secondary Display -> Show (F11)
